LEAGUE NEWS

A WILD START TO THE SEASON

The first month of league play presented some environmental challenges. Nassau Match Play faced a frost delay and a fog delay in its opening weeks. The Travel League was enveloped in clouds of bright green pollen during an event in the Pine Barrens. Eisenhower played under a tornado watch, and almost all leagues contended with torrential rain. At Wind Watch, as usual, the ladies did not let two rain outs in three weeks interrupt their socializing; they all just skipped right to the 19th hole.

The volatile Spring weather has finally settled down, and fleece jackets and rainwear have given way to Summer ensembles. At Calverton Links, Susan "Palm Beach" Blohm was resplendent in her pink and white, but the rest of her foursome thought she was a bit too "matchy."

Now that the fog has lifted, the clouds have parted, and the temperatures have soared, the leagues are off to a strong start. Several tournaments are already in the books and many players are piling up the birdies and chip-ins. Thanks to the 14 Scoring Captains who are keeping track of the hundreds of scores turned in each week, we will be able to recognize tournament winners and special achievements at our End of Season Celebration on September 26. We would like to celebrate the accomplishments of all of our members, not just tournament winners, so please let your league volunteers know if you have achieved any personal milestones, e.g. first birdie, first time scoring under 60 for 9 holes, etc. Even if you are just enjoying your time on the course with friends, send us some photos, or amusing anecdotes.

The long days of early Summer are the best times for our afternoon leagues. I hope you all get to enjoy this special time of year.
